Credit Report Corrections

How to repair incorrect data
Credit reporting companies buy their information from the three credit bureaus, and compile this information into an industry accepted format. Sometimes these credit reports contain incorrect information which can hurt your credit score, but only the bureau providing the information can make changes.

Step 1
The first step is to contact the creditor (department store, bank, of charge card company) and verify the actual status of the account. It's important to get this status in writing, along with the full name and telephone number of the person helping you.

Step 2
Find out which of the bureaus is reporting the misinformation. Your mortgage credit reporting company can help you determine which bureau is providing the data..

Step 3
Contact the bureau and request the forms used to dispute credit information. Complete these forms, and mail them back to the bureau(s) along with the documentation you gathered in Step 2.
